Career Highlights in Law Enforcement & Security, and Education
I worked in law enforcement for over 20 years, having been recruited by the state police, then serving most of those years at the Department of Corrections. My background and experience in law enforcement has given me the necessary background to understand the issues in communities and also within the prison system, itself, where I could offer / implement crime prevention and intervention strategies/bills that transform communities and other institutions, ensuring that mental health programs get the attention it deserves, as well.
Other security-related positions I have held within the law enforcement field included having served in a managerial role as a Supervisor in the security department of the Division of Transitional Assistance (DTA) in Roxbury, Ma. The Department of Transitional Assistance assists and empowers low-income individuals and families to meet their basic needs, improve their quality of life, and achieve long term economic self-sufficiency through economic programs, food programs, and training programs. In this position, I was able to see how barriers are removed and access to resources are expanded to those disproportionately affected by their economic conditions, and more importantly, what training opportunities they can take advantage of to improve their conditions, long term.
Additionally, as an educator in the Massachusetts public school system, having served as a certified middle school and high school teacher, and as a high school Assistant Principal of a summer program, my background and experience in the Boston public school system allowed me to see and experience, first-hand, what innovative strategies and policies I believe would work to enhance the school system and benefit its students.
My higher education was obtained from Roxbury Community College, Northeastern University, and the University of Massachusetts, all located in Boston.
